Companies are entitled to tax relief for qualifying charitable donations made to charities. The donations are paid gross without the deduction of income tax. The donations are deductible from the company’s total profits in the year in which the donations are made.
Can membership be gift aided?
Many charities generate income from membership, supporter and friends scheme subscriptions. These schemes could be eligible to claim a 25% Gift Aid repayment, even where members receive a range of benefits from the charity in return for their subscriptions.
What can be gift aided?

Can I give Gift Aid if I don’t work?
To use Gift Aid, you must have paid enough income tax or capital gains tax to HMRC in the tax year in which you make your donation – at least equal to the amount that the charity will reclaim. You do not have to be working to be paying tax.

The Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS) allows charities to claim 25% on cash donations of £30 or less and contactless card donations of £30 or less collected on or after 6 April 2019. From 6 April 2016, a charity can claim up to £2,000 in a tax year or £1,250 for earlier years.
Why do I have to pay tax on Gift Aid?
Gift aid is a tax efficient way for UK taxpayers to make donations to UK/EEA registered charities. Donating through gift aid means that charities can claim an extra 25p for every £1 they receive. The result is that the taxpayer receives additional tax relief of 20% by paying less higher-rate tax.
In the same way as with other donations, a valid Gift Aid declaration must be collected in order for the charity to make a Gift Aid claim for a membership subscription. The declaration can be made on paper, online or orally, and is usually completed as part of the subscription process.

I am a pensioner, do my donations qualify? You are still eligible if you have paid enough tax during the year to cover the amount we are reclaiming on your donations.
