Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) is a benefit paid to eligible people who are currently unemployed and actively looking for work. If you are unemployed but not actively seeking work you may instead be able to claim Income Support or, if you are sick or disabled, Employment and Support Allowance.
What to do when JSA runs out?
If your claim is ended you can apply for JSA again immediately, as long as you’re ready to do all you can to find work. Your benefit may be stopped for a period at the start of a new claim.
How long after claiming JSA can I claim?
You may have to wait up to 7 days after applying for your JSA to start, and up to 2 weeks after that to get your first payment.

You’ll also need to show you’re looking for work to keep getting payments. Your partner’s income and savings will not affect your claim. You can get contribution-based JSA for up to 182 days (about 6 months). After this you can talk to your work coach about your options. Your employment in the last 2 to 3 years does not affect your eligibility.
Can a person re-qualify for JSA if there is no entitlement?
If there is no entitlement to JSA(IB), a person can re-qualify for JSA(C) in a subsequent benefit year based on contributions paid in the relevant contribution years, providing that there has been a break in of at least twelve weeks. S/he must wait until the beginning of a new benefit year before s/he can claim again.
How often do you need to tell Jobcentre Plus about your JSA claim?
You must tell Jobcentre Plus if your circumstances change, for example you start working or your income changes. Your work coach will arrange appointments with you every 2 weeks. At these appointments, you must show your work coach what you’ve been doing to look for work, for example proof of job applications and interviews.
What happens if your JSA payment is stopped?
Your JSA payments can be stopped for a period if you do not do something your work coach asks you to do. This is called being ‘sanctioned’. For example, if you: Contact Jobcentre Plus as soon as possible if any of these apply to you. You may be able to keep your payment if you have good reason.
