If you have to send a tax return and did not send one last year, you need to register for Self Assessment and Class 2 National Insurance. Register by 5 October in your business’s second tax year. You could be fined if you do not.

When do you need to apply for self employment?
When you work for yourself you’ll need to let apply for self employment with HMRC once your business has a turnover (not profit) of £1,000 or more during a single tax year. A tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t register as self-employed (sole trader) if you are getting paid less than £1,000.
Can you be an employee and a self employed?
Many of these also apply if you own a limited company but you’re not classed as self-employed by HMRC. Instead you’re both an owner and employee of your company. You can be both employed and self-employed at the same time, for example if you work for an employer during the day and run your own business in the evenings.
