What is the difference between a psychotherapist and a licensed professional counselor?
Although the terms counseling and therapy are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between psychotherapy and psychological counseling. Counseling is also usually more short-term than therapy. Psychotherapy is more long-term than counseling and focuses on a broader range of issues.
Can you become a psychotherapist with a Counselling degree?
You could start by doing a Level 3 or 4 Diploma in Counselling before moving onto further training at degree and postgraduate level. You’ll usually need to have completed a counselling certificate to do a diploma, or have a lot of experience of working with vulnerable people.
Do Counsellors have to be accredited?
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
